Milestones & Timeline

ECON Healthcare Group was founded by Mr Ong Chu Poh (PBM, BBM), who currently serves as Group Executive Chairman and Group CEO. Under his leadership and expertise, the business has grown from a humble nursing home to become a leading eldercare service provider in the region.

As a youth volunteer in the 1970’s, Mr Ong saw a lack of dignity and respect in the way care was provided to the aged. Upon raising enough capital, he left his high-paying job in a multinational company and proceeded to open a nursing home in 1987 with just sixteen beds.

2016 - 2017
A first for renal care services

Official opening of 3 more ECONLIFE! Hubs, in Bedok, Sengkang, and Yung Kuang. Our centre in Yung Kuang was opened by Guest-Of-Honour Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam and is the first ECONLife! Hub provides Renal Care Services to the community. This opening also marked the launch of our renal care services under the ECON Advance Renal Care brand. To date, we operate two such Advance Renal Care centres.

2014 - 2015
Our family grows again

Building upon our Kuala Lumpur experience, ECON expanded its operations overseas and launched our 1st Purpose-built Flagship Medicare Centre & Nursing Home in Taman Perling, Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

ECON also became the first private operator to be awarded by Ministry of Social & Family services (MSF) to operate a senior activity centre in Bishan, to serve the senior residential community. This service is offered under the ECONLife! Hub brand. To date, we continue to operate 5 ECONLife! Hubs in Singapore.

2011 - 2013
Promoting active ageing

Through our excellent track record, ECON became the first private operator to be officially appointed by Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) to manage a fully subsidised nursing home under the Built-Own-Lease scheme in Yio Chu Kang Centre.

ECON is the first private operator to be awarded by Ministry of Social & Family services (MSF) to operate a senior activity centre in Bishan, to serve the senior residential community. This service is offered under the ECONLife! Hub brand. To date, we continue to operate 5 ECONLife! Hubs in Singapore.

2005 - 2010
Growing our family at home and abroad

In 2009, ECON signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park Land Co. Ltd in May for the conceptualisation, construction and management of a retirement living community project.

In Singapore, ECON also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Tan Tock Seng Hospital for a collaboration in the planning, design and development of hospitals and healthcare facilities, as well as provide management services and training for development of healthcare services in China.

We also expanded and opened 6 new nursing home locations in Ama Keng, Braddell, Choa Chu Kang, Chai Chee, Buangkok, and Yio Chu Kang.

2000 - 2004
Beyond borders, beyond nursing homes

ECON Healthcare officially opens the ECON Careskill Training Centre. An approved training centre for the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) to reinforce the healthcare industry. This period also marked the official opening of our first purpose-built ECON Medicare Centre and Nursing Home in Singapore, at Upper East Coast.

Marking our first expansion overseas, we also officially launched ECON’s first overseas ECON Medicare Centre and Nursing Home in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

1987 - 1999
Where it all began

The first ECON nursing home was established with 16 beds in Telok Kurau, Singapore. Over the next few years, we expanded from a single nursing home, to Bukit Timah, Pulasan Rd, Recreation Road, and Upper East Coast to meet the growing needs of elder healthcare.
